CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – Junior Noah Thompson (Frisco, Texas) threw a career-high 8.1 scoreless innings as the Seton Hall baseball team shut out Virginia, 3-0, in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday.
Thompson was dominant in his best-ever start, scattering two hits, walking only one and striking out six to earn the victory. Sophomore Ryan McLinskey (Pearl River, N.Y.) came in relief to get the second out of the ninth inning with a strikeout before Corey Sawyer (Kearny, N.J.) earned the save by recording the final out, a lazy fly ball to center field.
Offensively, eight of the nine Pirates in the starting lineup reached base, with Connor Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa.), Sebastiano Santorelli (Tuckahoe, N.Y.), Tyler Shedler-McAvoy (Allendale, N.J.) and Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) all collecting two hits apiece.
What Happened:
Seton Hall was able to give Thompson a lead right at the very start, striking for a single run in the top of the first inning. Shedler-McAvoy led off the game with a single to right field, and advanced to third on a single through the right side by Santorelli. Dana grounded into a double-play, but Shedler-McAvoy came in to plate the first run of the game.
The Hall got some insurance in the top of the fourth. Santorelli led off with a single to center field and moved to second base on a Dana walk. Toke followed with an RBI single to left field to put the Pirates up 2-0 and advance Dana to third base. Freshman Alex Clyde (Old Tappan, N.J.) then hit a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Dana with the Pirates' third run.
