Thompson pitched excellently, certainly good enough to earn the victory, but instead was saddled with the loss. The right-hander allowed just two unearned runs over 6.1 innings pitched. He struck out six batters and walked three.
Sophomore Jerry Huntzinger (Staten Island, N.Y.) provided all the offense the Pirates would produce in the team's first at bat, a solo home run. In all, the Pirates' offense mustered just three hits. Christian Del Castillo (Miami, Fla.) doubled with two outs in the fourth inning, while Tyler Shedler-McAvoy (Allendale, N.J.) had a two-out single in the sixth.
What Happened:
After scoring just one run in each of the first two games in the series, the Pirates needed only one batter for a run in game three. Huntzinger blasted a 2-1 pitch off the left field foul pole for his first career home run to give The Hall a 1-0 lead. But from there, the Pirates' offense went cold.
Although Thompson continued to pitch well, Creighton struck for single unearned runs in both the top of the fourth and fifth innings, enabling them to grab a 2-1 advantage.
In the top of the ninth inning, Creighton got some insurance on a pinch hit solo home run by Parker Upton off Pirate reliever Ryan McLinskey (Pearl River, N.Y.) to extend their lead to 3-1.
