DeVito pitched well despite taking the loss. The right-hander allowed two runs over six innings with four strikeouts. The Red Storm added an insurance run off the Pirate bullpen in the seventh inning.
Junior Tyler Shedler-McAvoy (Allendale, N.J.) again led the Pirate offense. The center fielder was the lone Pirate with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.
What Happened:
It was a pitchers' duel through five innings with DeVito and St. John's Joe LaSorsa matching each other zero-for-zero. St. John's got close, advancing runners to third base in three of the first four innings, but DeVito managed to remain unscathed. In the top of the fifth, the Pirates appeared poised to score. With a runner on second, senior Chris Villa (Staten Island, N.Y.) belted a deep drive to right field, but St. John's Peter Abinanti diving towards the warning track, made a spectacular catch to end the inning.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, St. John's broke through against DeVito. A one-out double by Ryan Markey drove in a pair of runs to give the Red Storm a 2-0 lead.
In the seventh, sophomore Hunter Waldis (Far Hills, N.J.) entered the game in relief, but had trouble with his control, hitting three batters to load the bases. Sophomore Ryan McLinskey (Pearl River, N.Y.) did an excellent job of limiting the damage to just one run, yet St. John's extended their lead to 3-0.
