DeVito, Waldis Stymie Xavier, 3-1
5/3/2019 9:31:00 PM | Baseball
DeVito allowed only one run over seven innings with eight strikeouts and only one walk to earn the victory. Waldis entered inherited in the top of the eighth inning with no outs and the bases loaded, but struck out his first batter and then induced a ground ball double-play to get out of the inning unscathed. The right-hander then tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his second save of the year.
Offensively, junior Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) reached base three times, going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Christian Del Castillo (Miami, Fla.) and Steve Grober (Hillsborough, N.J.) also had two hits apiece.
What Happened:
Toke and Sebastiano Santorelli (Tuckahoe, N.Y.) led off the second inning with singles, and with one out, Grober singled through the right side to score the first run of the game. Seton Hall left the bases loaded, but The Hall was able to take an early 1-0 advantage. In the top of the third, back-to-back doubles by Casey Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.) and Toke led to the Pirates' second run.
Xavier struck for a run off DeVito in the bottom of the third, but The Hall got the run back in the top of the fourth. Grober led off the inning with a triple, and with one out, Jerry Huntzinger (Staten Island, N.Y.) drove him in with a single to center field to extend The Hall's lead to 3-1.
