McLinskey fans six in first career start
Making his first career start, McLinskey struck out six batters and allowed two earned runs in four innings of work. Payero (0-1) punched out four in 4.2 relief innings.
Offensively, junior Casey Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.) and senior Mike Esposito (Chester, N.J.) both had RBI singles while junior Jerry Huntzinger (Staten Island, N.Y.) and senior Connor Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa.) registered multi-hit games for the Pirates (0-1).
What Happened:
In the top of the fourth, the Pirates had the bases loaded with two outs and Esposito at the plate. The senior ripped the first pitch he saw into left field, scoring sophomore Steve Grober (Hillsborough, N.J.) from third base and giving the Hall a 1-0 lead.
The Pirates added onto their lead the next inning on an RBI single from Dana that plated freshman Devin Hack (Somerville, N.J.).
After the Demon Deacons pushed three runs across in the bottom half of the fifth, Huntzinger led off the top of the seventh with a base hit to left. He then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Senior Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) stepped to the plate and hit a dribbler back to pitcher. The pitcher looked at Huntzinger, who went halfway home before retreating to third. It wound befuddling the Wake Forest hurler, who air mailed the throw to first base in an attempt to get Toke out first, allowing the tying run to cross home to make it 3-3.
