Shedler-McAvoy goes 3-for-5 with two runs scored for the Pirates on Tuesday night
The Pirates (4-6) used seven pitchers in its first midweek game of the season but senior Corey Sawyer (Kearny, N.J.) took the loss. Fresno State, who was picked to finish second in the Mountain West and finished 34th in the final RPI rankings in 2019, won in walk-off fashion following a rundown play at home plate where the ball was thrown away, allowing the game-winning run to score.
Redshirt junior Christian Del Castillo (Miami, Fla.) and freshman Devin Hack (Somerville, N.J.) turned in multi-hit games for the Hall.
What Happened:
The Pirates struck first in the top of the first inning where Shedler-McAvoy led off with a single, stole second base and moved to third on a single from Del Castillo. Dana plated Shedler-McAvoy on a fielder's choice RBI that gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the second, five consecutive singles led to three more runs for the Pirates as the Hall saw RBI base knocks from Hack, Del Castillo and Dana.
The Bulldogs pushed across the game-tying run in the bottom of the third that made it 4-4. After that, both teams would have their opportunities to plate the go-ahead run in nine innings but the pitching staffs and defenses found ways around it.
The Pirates' best chance arguably came in the seventh when Shedler-McAvoy led off an inning with a base hit for the second time, when to second on a sac bunt and third on a fly out. With two outs, senior Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) rocketed a ball that hit off the pitcher, who fielded it cleanly and threw Toke out at first to end the threat.
