Toke goes 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI for The Hall
By Mark Mincolelli
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Graduate student Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) went 4-for-5 with three RBI and sophomore Will Gale (Scotch Plain, N.J.) drove in four runs from the nine spot in the lineup but the Seton Hall baseball team was unable to find an answer for Florida Atlantic's offense as the Owls claimed the game two slugfest, 17-14.
Â
Senior Jerry Huntzinger (Staten Island, N.Y.) registered his fourth straight contest with a hit and classmate Casey Dana recorded his second consecutive multi-hit game with two doubles for the Pirates (1-3).
Â
Here's What Happened
Â
The Owls jumped out to a 9-0 lead but the Pirates battled back in a gutsy showing of offensive power and speed in the top of the fourth.
Â
Dana opened the scoring with a two RBI single that scored Huntzinger and Tyler Shedler-McAvoy (Allendale, N.J.). Following a bases loaded walk drawn by freshman Dane Hoggard (Virginia Beach, Va.), Gale chased a fastball out of the strike zone that was driven over the head of the FAU second baseman, scoring two more and making it 9-4. With the bases loaded and The Hall trailing 9-5, Toke launched a bases-clearing double to the warning track, knotting up the score at 9-9.
Â
FAU's bottom half of the order responded with a quick run immediately following the theatrical inning and extended their lead late by scoring seven runs over the seventh and eighth innings.
Â
Seton Hall wouldn't go away quietly in the ninth inning. RBI singles from junior Steve Grober (Hillsborough, N.J.) and sophomore Staus Pokrovsky (Pittsgrove, N.J.) drew the Pirates closer. Following an RBI groundout that made it 17-12, Gale registered a two RBI triple that made it 17-14. The rally was halted there though as the Owls pulled out the game-two victory.
