Arteaga Walks Off Butler for Pirates' first BIG EAST Win

South Orange, N.J. – The Seton Hall softball team walked off Butler for their first BIG EAST win of the season on Sunday, 5-4. Hailey Arteaga (Upland, Calif.) drove in the game winning run for the Pirates in the bottom of the seventh while Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) earned the win after five scoreless innings of relief.

How it Happened

The Bulldogs jumped on the scoreboard first with a run in the visiting half of the first.
The Pirates would respond in their half of the inning when Arteaga singled in two to put The Hall ahead, 2-1.
The lead wouldn't last long however as Butler tied things up with a solo homer in the second.
After singling to start the inning and reaching second on a throwing error, Baylee Allender (Rosharon, Texas) would score the go-ahead run on another throwing error after stealing third base to make it a 3-2 Pirate lead.
Butler would go deep for the second time in two innings, this time a two-run shot to go up, 4-3 in the third.
The teams would trade scoreless frames before Smith helped herself in the circle with an RBI double off the wall in right field to knot things up at four in the sixth.
A Darby Pandolfo (Massapequa, N.Y.) double in the bottom half of the seventh put Arteaga in a spot to win the game. The graduate student would do just that with a single to right field that would score Pandolfo and give The Hall a 5-4 victory.

Notes and Numbers

The Pirates outhit the Bulldogs 11-6.
The win moved the Pirates to 4-7 on the season and 1-2 in the BIG EAST.
Smith earned her first win of the season with five scoreless innings in relief to go along with four strikeouts and only two hits.
Pandolfo, Arteaga, Allender and Jaden Tate (Las Vegas, Nev.) all had multi-hit efforts in the win.
With two doubles today, Pandolfo tied Jaden Tate for the team lead with four two-baggers on the season.
After driving in three runs today, Arteaga now has 116 career RBIs which ties her with Katie Pierce for fifth-most in program history.

What's Next
The Pirates will travel to Fordham for a midweek rematch with the Rams. The Hall won the first match up 12-6 on March 6. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
