Series finale will be at 11 a.m. on Sunday due to poor weather in the forecase
DAVIDSON, N.C. - Despite stellar pitching performances from sophomore Chris Shine (South Plainfield, N.J.) and Sean Miller (Newton, N.J.), the Seton Hall baseball team was unable to get by Davidson as the Wildcats walked the contest off in the bottom of the ninth inning, 2-1.
Â
Making his third appearance of the season, Shine was resilient through five scoreless innings striking out a season-best five batters while stranding all five runners allowed on base. The underclassman right-hander has yet to allow a run in 2021 through 12.2 innings of work. Miller punched out four Wildcats in a pair of relief frames.
Â
Offensively, Miller's fellow seniors Casey Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.) and Jerry Huntzinger (Staten Island, N.Y.) both went 1-for-3 with respective singles Saturday afternoon. Dana drove in Huntzinger for the Pirates' only run, his 10th RBI of the season.
Â
Here's What Happened
Â
Seton Hall punched in the contest's first run, after Dana pelted a chopping ground ball back to the Davidson hurler, enough to score the speedy Huntzinger from third base.
Â
After Shine exited the game following his third scoreless showing of his second Seton Hall campaign, graduate transfer Mark Anderson (Berwyn, PA) took the mound in relief. During the game's sixth inning, Davidson knotted the score at one after a Wildcat base runner crossed home plate via a wild pitch that trickled to the backstop.
Â
All scoring was halted in the ensuing two and a half innings after each team's pitching staff proved flawless throughout. For Seton Hall, it was Miller who shut down the Wildcats in his two innings of work, however another ninth-inning rally would slam the door on the Pirates hopes toward extra innings. A two-out RBI double to deep left-center field off the barrel of Davidson's shortstop propelled the Wildcats to their 14th-straight home victory at Wilson Field.
Â
Notes
Â
- Shine tied a career high in strikeouts during an outing (5) and topped a career high in innings pitched through an outing (5.0).
- Dana registered his 80th RBI through his career at Seton Hall on Saturday evening.
