Payero strikes out four in relief for Seton Hall

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Despite a strong relief outing from junior pitcher Nick Payero (Monroe, N.J.) and steady offensive showings by sophomore Devin Hack (Somerville, N.J.) and senior Tyler Shedler-McAvoy (Allendale, N.J.), the Seton Hall baseball team could not avoid a series sweep Sunday against Davidson, dropping the finale 3-2.

Payero, making his fifth appearance of the 2021 campaign, entered the contest in the fourth inning. The right-hander struck out four Wildcats and didn't allow a run in 2.1 innings of work.

Offensively for Seton Hall, Hack went 1-for-3 and registered his second extra-base hit of the season with a leadoff double in the game's sixth inning, while Shedler-McAvoy slashed a single and plated his team-best 13th RBI of 2021.

Here's What Happened:

The Wildcats established an early two-run lead courtesy of a leadoff solo home run in the first inning and an RBI single, but the Pirate pitching staff put a stop to any scoring for the ensuing four innings.

Amidst shutout efforts by Payero and junior reliever Blaise Panzini (Spring Lake, N.J.), Seton Hall knotted the contest at two runs. Graduate student Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) grounded a Wildcat offering to first base scoring senior Jerry Huntzinger (Staten Island, N.Y.) and a sacrifice fly ball into deep center field off the bat of Shedler-McAvoy that scored Hack from third base.

Panzini however would then run into a jam in the seventh inning that allowed Davidson to regain the lead. A pinch-hit single scored what eventually proved to be the game's winning run, as Seton Hall could not answer in the following two frames.
