Shedler-McAvoy and Clyde register three RBI a piece on Thursday

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - A solid start from senior Ryan McLinskey (Pearl River, N.Y.) and the third 10-plus run output of the season led the Seton Hall baseball team to an 11-4 win over Fordham on Thursday afternoon at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium at Owen T. Carroll Field.

McLinskey earned his first win of the season for the Pirates (7-11) after striking out six and allowing only one run in five innings of work. Senior Tyler Shedler-McAvoy (Allendale, N.J.) and junior Alex Clyde (Old Tappan, N.J.) both drove in three runs for The Hall while freshman Zack Sylvester (Montville, N.J.) went 2-for-5 with two RBI.

The win clinched the season series against the Rams.

Here's What Happened:

The Pirates opened the scoring in the bottom of the first where senior Jerry Huntzinger (Staten Island, N.Y.) got caught in a rundown between third base and home plate but took advantage of a throwing error by the catcher as he crossed the plate to give Seton Hall a 1-0 lead. An infield RBI single from Sylvester in the bottom of the second made it 2-0 before the Rams cut their deficit to one in the visiting half of the third on an RBI single.

Junior Steve Grober (Hillsborough, N.J.) responded in the bottom of the frame with a sacrifice fly that made it 3-1 before Shedler-McAvoy's third home run of the season and Slyvester's second RBI single of the afternoon added insurance and pushed the Seton Hall advantage to four, 5-1.

The Rams came roaring back with a three-run seventh inning that made it a 5-4 ballgame but the Pirate offense stepped up again. With the bases loaded and one out, Clyde delivered a bases-clearing triple to the left center field gap that gave The Hall some much needed breathing room. An RBI single for Huntzinger and a two-run double off the bat of Shedler-McAvoy followed Clyde's big hit and it pushed the Pirate lead to 11-4.

Junior Nick Payero (Monroe, N.J.) recorded five strikeouts in just three innings of relief work and freshman Zane Probst (Mill Hall, Pa.) finished the game on the mound for the Pirates.

Seton Hall and Fordham will wrap up their season series in South Orange on Saturday at 4 p.m.
