The junior from Verona, N.J. strikes out seven in eight innings of work
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Junior David Feta (Verona, N.J.) struck out seven batters, allowed only four hits and one run but it wasn't enough as Fordham salvaged the final game of the series against the Seton Hall baseball team on Saturday, 2-1.
Four of Festa's seven strikeouts ended an inning and he struck out the side in the eighth – his final inning of work. The defense behind Festa played splendidly as the Pirates turned two double plays.
The first six Rams that went to bat in the game went down but they got a base runner in the top of the third. That runner was erased, though, on a 5-4-3 double play that featured a nice scoop at first base by senior Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.).
Festa then retired nine straight between the fourth and sixth innings before Fordham led off another inning with a single, this time in the seventh. But another Seton Hall double play – this time started by senior Jerry Huntzinger (Staten Island, N.Y.) behind the plate – stymied the Ram rally. With two outs, Fordham worked a walk and a double to left field that produced the only run of the game.
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth, sophomore Jonathan Luders (Lynnfield, Mass.) led off the inning with a double off the wall in left field but he was left stranded.
Seton Hall returns to action on Friday, April 9, when it welcomes Butler for the first BIG EAST series of the season for both programs.
