Shine, Cinnella combine to allow two hits and two runs in the victory
PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA. – The Seton Hall baseball team used a stout all-around effort to clinch its second BIG EAST series of the season as the Pirates topped Villanova, 13-2, in seven innings on Saturday.
Â
Sophomore Chris Shine (South Plainfield, N.J.) earned the win for the Pirates (12-13, 5-1 BIG EAST) on the mound. Junior Joe Cinnella (Mahwah, N.J.) struck out two and didn't allow a hit in 2.2 innings of relief.
Â
Seton Hall stole a season-high seven bases and five Pirates registered multi-hit games: senior Jerry Huntzinger (Staten Island, N.Y.), graduate student Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.), senior Collin Sheehan (Doylestown, Pa.), junior Steve Grober (Hillsborough, N.J.) and graduate student Connor Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa.).
Â
How It Happened:
Â
With Shedler-McAvoy on third base and one out, sophomore Will Gale (Scotch Plains, N.J.)  opened the scoring with an RBI single that gave Seton Hall a 1-0 lead. The Pirates did the rest of their damage – five more runs in the inning – with two outs. A bases clearing single by Huntzinger scored two, a one-run single by Hack, an RBI double by senior Casey Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.) and a one-run single for Toke pushed the Seton Hall advantage to 6-0.
Â
Shine retired the side in the home half of the second but the Wildcats cut their deficit to five, 6-1, after pushing across a run in the bottom of the third. The Pirates responded in the top of the fourth with three more runs as Sheehan plated two on a bases clearing double before scoring himself on a wild pitch that made it 9-1 Seton Hall.
Â
The Pirates' final crooked number of the day came in the top of the sixth where a bases loaded walk gave Gale an RBI, Grober delivered a two RBI single and Hood – making his first appearance of the season after suffering an injury in the offseason – completed his two-hit day with an RBI single.
