Sheehan’s Late Home Run Not Enough Against St. John’s, 5-4

The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for the Pirates
Senior Connor Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa.) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Sheehan's two-run blast was his first at Seton Hall (13-14, 6-2 BIG EAST).
Starter Ryan McLinskey (Pearl River, N.Y.) allowed two runs and struck out six in five innings of work. Freshman Zane Probst (Mill Hall, Pa.) – who was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll this past week – tossed another scoreless inning of relief and has only allowed two hits and no runs through the first 8.1 innings of his career.
How It Happened:
In the top of the first, sophomore Devin Hack (Somerville, N.J.) continued his hot hitting with a single to left center and he advanced to second on a throwing error by the left fielder. With two outs, graduate student Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) took an inside pitch and dropped it into left field for a single as Hack came around to score, giving Seton Hall an early 1-0 lead.
McLinskey worked a clean home half of the first and Hood led off the top of the second getting hit by a pitch. Junior David Haberman (Morristown, N.J.) then executed a sacrifice bunt that was pushed up the first base line and moved Hood to second base. A base hit off the bat of junior Steve Grober (Hillsborough, N.J.) advanced Hood to third before sophomore Will Gale (Scotch Plains, N.J.) sent him home for the Pirates' second run on a deep sac fly to center field.
After McLinskey worked out of a jam in the third inning, St. John's pushed runs across in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the score up at 2-2. Seton Hall would put a runner on in the sixth and two runners on the seventh but couldn't muster run as the Red Storm was able to pull ahead by scoring a run on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the seventh that made it 3-2.
The Pirates would respond though in the eighth. With two outs, Hood recorded his second hit of the day with a single up the middle. Sheehan then stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter and turned on a 1-1 offering to right center field that cleared the wall with plenty to spare, putting the Pirates ahead, 4-3.
St. John's fought back again as they tied up the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth inning and would eventually prevail in the 11th inning with an RBI double.
Up Next:
The Pirates and the Red Storm will square off again tomorrow with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
