
Smith's 10 K's, Two-Run Homer Lead Pirates on Day One of Tiger Invitational

How it Happened
- The River Hawks would get on the board first with two runs in the top of the first on RBI singles from Becca Vaillancourt and Ryley White.
- The Pirates would answer back with a run in their half of the inning as Janae Barracato (Hempstead, N.Y.) singled, stole second and scored on a throwing error to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.
- Smith made quick work of the River Hawk batters in the second and third innings with back-to-back frames of striking out the side.
- UMass Lowell would add two more in the top of the fifth on RBI knocks from Maria Moccio and White to make it a 4-1 ballgame. They would then add two more unearned runs in the sixth to grow the lead.
- In the home-half of the seventh, The Hall would string together three consecutive singles with two outs from Ashly Colonnetta (Cypress, Texas), Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) and Barracato with Barracato picking up the RBI to make it a 6-2 final.
- Smith tossed all seven innings for the Pirates picking up 10 strikeouts along the way. For Smith, it was her second 10-plus strikeout game of her career.
- Barracato and Colonnetta each had multi-hit affairs in the setback.
- The River Hawks narrowly out-hit the Pirates 9-7.
Auburn (RV) 9 – Seton Hall 1
How it Happened
- The Tigers jumped on the scoreboard early with three runs in each of the first two innings before taking on an additional run in the third.
- The Pirates would get a run back in the top-half of the fourth. Wingo would reach on an error before Smith singled her to third a few batters later. With runners on first and third, Wingo was able to cross the plate on a passed ball to make it a 7-1 game.
- Auburn would get that run back in the home-half of the inning on a fielder's choice.
- In the sixth, Barracato would lead off the inning with a single the other way. Next up, Smith drove a ball over the left field wall for a two-run home run to cut the Tiger's lead to five.
- The Tigers would respond with a two-run homer of their own in the sixth to make it a 10-3 final.
- For Smith, the long ball was the first of her career.
- Sydney Babik (Gilbert, Ariz.) fanned four Tigers over four innings of two-hit relief in the circle.
- Marisa Pla (San Clemente, Calif.) picked up her first hit of the season in the setback.
- The Hall played a clean game defensively highlighted by solid play at shortstop from Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.).
The Pirates will play two more at the Tiger Invitational tomorrow with rematches against UMass Lowell and Auburn.
