2/12/2022 7:50:00 PM | Softball
Seton Hall 12 – UMass Lowell 0 (5)
How it Happened
- The Pirates opened the game with back-to-back doubles from Janae Barracato (Hempstead, N.Y.) and Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) before a Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) sac-fly would score Barracato to put The Hall up, 1-0.
- Freshman Jenna Blevins (Flat Rock, Mich.) provided the bang in inning two, driving a ball over the left field wall for a solo home run to double the Pirates' lead.
- Seton Hall would erupt for five runs in the third inning. More back-to-back doubles from Barracato and Wingo provided the first two runs of the inning scoring Barracato and Ashly Colonnetta (Cypress, Texas) following a lead-off single. Hannah Alexander (Wrightstown, N.J.) would single home another before Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) would plate a fourth run on a sacrifice fly. Senior Gabby Ciancio (Marlboro, N.J.) would cap the inning with a fifth run on a wild pitch.
- The Pirates would pick up right where they left off in the third with five more innings in the fourth. Again, it was hits from Barracato and Wingo that set the inning up, as the duo would come around to score on a pair of errors from the River Hawks. Blevins would add her second RBI of the afternoon with a single to put the Pirates up 10-0. Marisa Pla (San Clemente, Calif.) would put the exclamation point on the victory with a two-run triple for a 12-0 final.
- The win serves as the first in the Seton Hall tenure of new Pirate head coach Angie Churchill.
- The home run for Blevins was the first collegiate hit of her career.
- Babik improves to 1-0 on the season, fanning five River Hawks enroute to her first career complete game.
- Barracato was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles and three runs scored. Barracato's two doubles extended her program record for two-baggers to 53 for her career.
- Wingo picked up two doubles of her own with a 3-for-3 afternoon knocking in two runs in the process.
- Alexander, Taylor Soanes (Missouri City, Texas) and Olivia Gilbert (Johnston, R.I.) picked up their first respective hits of the season in the victory. For Gilbert, her single was the first of her collegiate career.
- The 13 hits for the Pirates were their most in a game since they had 18 in a 10-inning win over Villanova last season.
Auburn (RV) 9 – Seton Hall 1 (5)
How it Happened
- The Pirates were the first team to push a run across when they did so in the top half of the first. Smith was able to double in Barracato to put the Pirates ahead 1-0.
- Smith would hold Auburn scoreless through two innings only surrendering one hit.
- The Tigers would pick up two runs in both the third and fourth before putting up a five-spot in the fifth for a 9-1 final in five.
- The double for Smith was her second of the season while she picked up her team-leading fourth RBI in the process.
