
Offense Erupts for 13 Runs in Day One Win at Retriever Round Robin

Catonsville, Md. – The Seton Hall softball team's offense exploded in their first game of day one in the Retriever Round Robin defeating the host school UMBC 13-7 on Saturday. Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) led the way with three hits for the Pirates while knocking in three runs. Emily Pena (Algonquin, Ill.) picked up her first career home run while Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) earned the victory in the circle. The Pirates would drop game two against Saint Joseph's 9-0 in six innings.

How it Happened
- The Pirates opened the game with a Janae Barracato (Hempstead, N.Y.) single followed by a Wingo RBI triple to plate the first run of the ballgame. Wingo would then come around to score on a wild pitch to put the Pirates up 2-0
- In the second, The Hall would add another run, this time it was a lead off walk by Pena who was pinch run for by Miranda Arruda (Pawcatuck, Conn.). Arruda would advance to second on a wild pitch, move to third on a fielder's choice and then score on another fielder's choice to make it a 3-0 game.
- The Retrievers would get an unearned run back in the second on an error to bring the score to 3-1.
- In the top half of the third, Jenna Blevins (Flat Rock, Mich.) would single home Wingo who led off the inning with a base knock of her own to make it, 4-1.
- The Pirates would explode for five runs in the fourth. Marisa Pla (San Clemente, Calif.) and Ashly Colonnetta (Cypress, Texas) started the inning with back-to-back singles. Wingo would double home two before Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) would single home another.
- UMBC would score two on a two-run home run in the fourth and then add another run in the fifth to make it a 9-3 game.
- Seton Hall would score four more runs in the sixth started off with a Baylee Allender (Rosharon, Texas) single followed by a Blevins RBI single. Pena would then launch a two-run home run to left. Following a Pla double, Colonnetta would pick up an RBI single to make it 13-4.
- UMBC would rally for three runs in the bottom of the inning but that would be it as the Pirates came away with a 13-7 victory.
- The home run for Pena was the first of her career.
- The three-hit game for Wingo was the second of the season and third multi-hit affair of the year.
- Wingo, Allender, Blevins, Colonnetta and Pla all had multi-hit games for The Hall as nine Pirates got into the hit column.
- In the circle, Smith threw 4.2 innings without surrendering an earned run and four strikeouts on her way to the victory.
- The Pirates outhit the Retrievers 15-8.
- The 15 hits sets a new season high for the team after they racked up 13 hits last Sunday against UMass Lowell and are the most in a game since they had 18 in a 10-inning win over Villanova last season.
How it Happened
- The Hawks jumped on the board first with four runs on three hits including a three-run home run to go up 4-0 in the first.
- Saint Joseph's would then add a run in both the second and fourth to swell their lead to six.
- A three-spot in the top of the sixth would go on to make it a 9-0 final.
- Barracato picked up two hits in the setback including a double to lead the Pirates' offensive attack.
- Arruda picked up her first career hit for the Pirates with a single in the third.
- Allender reached base twice with a single and walk.
The Pirates will play day two of the Retriever Round Robin #1 tomorrow with rematches with UMBC and Saint Joseph's.
