Freshman Lauren Caye (Pittsburgh, Pa. ) (3) and junior Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) (2) each had multiple home runs on the afternoon. In total, six different Pirates went deep with Jess Forte (Middlesex, N.J.), Baylee Allender (Rosharon, Texas), Lela Allen (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Jenna Blevins (Flat Rock, Mich.) each leaving the yard as well.
In the circle, Smith and Sydney Babik (Gilbert, Ariz.) combined to pitch 10 innings while only surrendering four runs and striking out six in two complete-game victories.
Seton Hall 19 – UMBC 2 (5)
How it Happened
- Continuing her hot start to the season, Janae Barracato (Hempstead, N.Y.) opened things with a double before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) would bring her home to open the scoring. Two batters later, Blevins would homer to right center to give The Hall an early 4-0 lead after one.
- In the third, Allender with lead things off with a solo shot to center. Allen would follow that up with a long ball of her own to make it 6-0 after three.
- Allender would knock home a few more Pirates with a two-run single to score Barracato and Wingo. Blevins would single home Allender before Hannah Alexander (Wrightstown, N.J.) would get in on the action with an RBI single of her own to grow the Pirate lead to 11-0.
- The Pirates would erupt for eight runs in the fifth on three home runs. In just her second collegiate plate appearance, Caye would drive one over the wall in left. Not to be outdone, in her first career plate appearance Forte would hit a solo shot to give the Pirates back-to-back homers. Ally Taylor (Mission Viejo, Calif.) would double before Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) would bring home two on a double of her own. Amber Johnson (Belfair, Wash.) would pick up her first career hit before Taylor Soanes (Missouri City, Texas) would bring her in with first career RBI on a single to left. Caye would then cap off the huge inning with a three-run blast for her second home run of the inning to make it a 19-0 ball game.
- UMBC would get two runs back in on RBI singles in the fifth but that would be it as The Hall would win game one 19-2 in five innings.
- The 19 runs set the program record for most runs in a game which was previously 18, set against Bucknell on Feb. 18, 2017.
- The 17-run margin of victory was the largest in program history. The previous mark was 16 in a 16-0 victory over Saint Peter's in 2013.
- The 19 hits tied a program record which was last reached, also against Saint Peter's in 2013.
- The six home runs for the Pirates were the most in a single game since they hit eight in a 17-6 victory over North Texas on Feb. 7, 2015.
- Caye is the first Pirate to have a multi-home run game since Jaden Tate did so against Iona in 2020.
- Thirteen different Pirates got into the hit column with six picking up multi-hit efforts.
- With the win Babik moved to 2-1 in the circle this season.
- The home run for Allender was the 22nd of her career and moves her into a tie for seventh place with Katie Pierce on the program's career leaderboard.
How it Happened
- After Barracato, Wingo and Allender all reached to load the bases, Smith promptly unloaded them with a grand slam to continue the Pirates' offensive outburst and make it a 4-0 game after one.
- The Hall would double their lead after two with four more in the second. A Barracato double followed by a Wingo HBP would lead up to an Allender two-run double to left center. Smith would follow that with her second home run in as many innings, this time with a solo shot to left making it an 8-0 game.
- The Hawks would grab a run back on a solo home run in the second to make it 8-1.
- In the fourth, Caye would again come to the plate with runners on and would again drive the ball over the fence with a three-run home run to give her three homers on the afternoon and give the Pirates an 11-1 lead.
- Again Saint Joseph's would grab a single run, this time in the bottom of the fifth, but that would be all as Seton Hall would win 11-2 in five innings.
- The eleven runs would represent the fourth time in eight games that the Pirates' offense has scored at least 10 runs.
- Barracato, Wingo and Smith all had multiple hits in the victory with Barracato going a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish with a double and a walk to her credit.
- Smith picked up her second win of the season in the circle striking out three in the complete-game victory. The two home runs for Smith were the most since Caye accomplished the feat earlier in the afternoon.
The Pirates will have some time off before heading west to take part in the Libby Matson Tournament hosted by Pacific from March 4-6. Seton Hall will play five games over the course of three days against the likes of Pacific, Nevada and Idaho State.
