Merion Station, Pa. — Starter Brennan O'Neill (Morristown, N.J.) tossed six strong innings and struck out four and graduate student Collin Sheehan (Doylestown, Pa.) went 2-for-5 with three RBI as the Seton Hall baseball team defeated Saint Joseph's, 9-4, on Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates split a doubleheader yesterday with the Hawks and clinched the series with the victory today.
Sophomore Zack Sylvester (Montville, N.J.) tallied three hits and scored a run while sophomore Michael Ciminiello (Saint James, N.Y.) racked up five strikeouts in three innings of relief work.
How It Happened
The offense was on from the start as the Pirates pushed two runs across in the first inning as Pokrovsky and Gale registered RBI singles that gave The Hall a 2-0 lead. However, the Hawks would respond with a run in the home half of the first and two runs in the bottom of the second inning that gave themselves a 3-2 advantage.
In the top of the third, Gale reached on a one-out single and senior David Haberman (Morristown, N.J.) was hit by a pitch to give the Pirates runners on first and second. Sheehan, who had a big weekend at the plate for the Pirates, delivered once again with a game-tying double. The next batter was Grober and he drove in the go-ahead runs on a single through the right side that put the Pirates back on top, 5-3.
Seton Hall tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth. With two on and one out, Sheehan delivered again at the dish with a bases clearing RBI double that gave the Pirates a 7-3. St. Joe's drove in a run in the sixth that made it 7-4 but the Pirates provided some insurance in the seventh inning. Grober drew a one-out walk and the next batter was junior Oscar Murray (Brentwood, Calif.) who delivered the dagger with a two-run home run, extending the Pirates' lead to 9-4.
Ciminiello came on in the bottom of the seventh and worked three scoreless frames to close out the win.
