Villanova, Pa. - Junior Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) had two hits and scored the tying run for the Seton Hall softball team in the sixth inning at Villanova, but the game extended into extra innings, where the Wildcats walked it off in the eighth, 3-2, Saturday at Villanova Softball Complex.

Smith continues to hit the ball very well with a double and single on the day. Freshman Lauren Caye (Pittsburgh, Pa.) tripled and scored a run, and freshman Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.O) went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Sophomore Sydney Babik (Gilbert, Ariz.) gave the Pirates seven very strong innings in limiting the potent Wildcats offense to six hits.

How It Happened
Villanova got both of its early runs in the second inning, coming on three doubles. Seton Hall didn't have much going until an exciting top of the sixth inning. Caye had a great battle with Villanova pitcher Sara Kennedy, fouling off seven pitches, and on the 11th pitch of the at-bat, she stroked a hard line drive to right field that seemingly should have been caught but wasn't. The ball rolled to the wall, and Caye raced to third base.

Colonnetta followed with a fly ball to left that served as a sacrifice fly to bring home Caye and make it a 2-1 game. Smith then decided to swing on a 3-0 pitch and doubled to right center. Hill followed with a single to right, and Smith then took third and raced home and successfully evaded the tag at the plate to tie the game.

The game went into extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Caye led off with a triple, but she was left stranded there. In the bottom half, Villanova got the first two batters on base on singles, and after one out was recorded, Megan Kern ended the game with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Sydney Hayes.

Numbers & Notes

Babik started in the circle for the Pirates and gave them seven solid innings. She allowed three runs on six hits. She did not walk a batter and struck out four batters.
Smith now has her third multi-hit game in her last four played. She is now seven for her last 15 at the plate.
Caye tripled and scored a run. The triple was the first of her career.
Hill continues to establish herself as one of the conference's top hitters. She went 3-for-4 on the day, her fifth three-hit game in BIG EAST play. She's now hitting .441 in 20 BIG EAST games.
The Pirates fell to 0-3 in extra inning games this season, all of them coming in conference play.
