Wingo Posts 12th Multi-Hit Game of Season, Pirates Fall at Villanova

Villanova, Pa. - Freshman Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) and junior Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) each scored runs for the Seton Hall softball team, but Villanova climbed out of an early hole with two runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth to beat the Pirates, 5-2, in the rubber game of a three-game series Sunday at Villanova Softball Complex.

Wingo was the lone Pirate to post a multi-hit day, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Junior Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) had extended her shutout streak against Villanova to 10-2/3 innings pitched before surrendering a home run with one out in the fourth inning.

Seton Hall is now 7-14 in BIG EAST play with one series remaining. The Pirates still have a chance to match their most conference wins since 2005 if they can sweep St. John's next weekend.

How It Happened
Seton Hall struck first in the second inning as Hill and Wingo had back-to-back singles, and an error in the field, set up runners on second and third with no outs. Freshman Jenna Blevins (Flat Rock, Mich.) hit a ground ball to third, and third baseman Chloe Smith looked Hill back and threw to first for an out, but Hill dashed home on the throw and evaded a tag to put the Pirates on the board. Wingo took third on the play and then scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Olivia Gilbert (Johnston, R.I.) to make it 2-0.

That score held until the fourth when catcher Ally Jones stroked a two-run home run to tie the game. Villanova then hit back-to-back home runs to start the fifth inning to go up 4-2.

After their strong second inning, the Pirates got only one runner to second base the remainder of the contest as Paige Rauch pitched a complete game.

Numbers & Notes

Smith had pitched three shutout innings prior to allowing the fourth inning home run.
Sophomore Sydney Babik (Gilbert, Ariz.) came on in relief and gave the Pirates two innings, allowing one run.
Wingo picked up her 12th multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Blevins now has at least one RBI in four of her last five games played.
Despite losing the series, the run differential was only -1 for the Pirates, who played the second-place team in the BIG EAST extremely tough.
Villanova now leads the all-time series 48-40.
