South Orange, N.J. — The Seton Hall baseball team poured in a season-high 14 runs while its pitching staff allowed only three runs as the Pirates defeated Princeton, 14-3, on Wednesday afternoon at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium at Owen T. Carroll Field.
Junior Devin Hack (Somerville, N.J.) drove in four runs as part of a 3-for-5 day and the Pirates saw six total RBI from the eight and nine spots in the lineup as freshman Jedier Hernandez (Trenton, N.J.) and junior Jonathan Luders (Lynnfield, Mass.) both tallied three runs batted in. Seven pitchers appeared for The Hall and junior Aaron Groller (Harleysville, Pa.) earned the victory.
How It Happened
Princeton struck first with a run in the top of the first but the Pirates posted a crooked number in the bottom of the second. Senior Alex Clyde (Old Tappan, N.J.) put down a sacrifice bunt with two runners on and the pitcher's toss went wide of first base, allowing senior Steve Grober (Hillsborough, N.J.) to score and knot up the score at 1-1. Hernandez drove in the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly and, later in the inning, Hack cleared the bases with a three-run double, giving the Pirates a 5-1 lead.
With a runner on second base and one out in the top of the third, freshman Daniel Frontera (Red Bank, N.J.) picked off the runner at second for the second out and ended the inning with a swinging strikeout. Frontera worked a 1-2-3 fourth inning and freshman Jake Potts (Glen Mills, Pa.) made his first career appearance and tossed a scoreless fifth.
The Pirates were holding onto a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the seventh when consecutive two-run singles by Hernandez and Luders that gave Seton Hall some breathing room with a 9-3 advantage. Five more runs in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by RBI base hits by redshirt sophomore Will Gale (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and Hack, put the game out of reach and made it a 14-3 ball game in favor of the Pirates.
