Bowie, Md. — The Seton Hall baseball team struck out 12 batters as a pitching staff and scored 11 runs on 13 hits to secure the win in the series finale against Georgetown as the Pirates topped the Hoyas, 11-2, on Sunday afternoon.
Junior Jonathan Luders (Lynnfield, Mass.) and redshirt sophomore Will Gale (Scotch Plains, N.J.) racked up three-hit games and, with junior Devin Hack (Somerville, N.J.), drove in eight of the Pirates' 11 runs on the day in the top three spots of the batting order. Freshman Jedier Hernandez (Trenton, N.J.) went 3-for-5 and crossed the plate three times.
Senior Brennan O'Neill (Morristown, N.J.) posted six strikeouts in his third win of the season and sophomore Zane Probst (Mill Hall, Pa.) fanned five batters in 2.2 innings of relief work.
How It Happened
The Pirates got on the scoreboard in the top of the second where freshman Michael Callan Moss (Brooklyn, N.Y.) drove in junior Mark McNelly (Limerick, Pa.) from third base on a sacrifice fly. The next inning, Hack made it 2-0 Pirates on an RBI groundout.
Seton Hall posted a crooked number in the top of the fifth where senior Justin Scotto (Tinton Falls, N.J.) got the scoring started on a one-out, solo home run on an 0-2 count that made it 3-0 Pirates. Three one-run singles from Gale, Hack and Luders extended the lead to 6-0 and, on the base paths, The Hall took advantage of a throwing error by the catcher as Gale came home on a ball thrown into center field after Hack swiped second base.
The Hoyas cut the deficit to five, 7-2, in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs but the Pirates countered with two runs of their own in the top of the fifth. With two runners on, Gale singled through the right side and Moss scored easily from third. The Pirates were down to the final out of the inning but an infield single off the bat of Luders allowed two runs to come around, making it 10-2 Pirates.
Sophomore Drew Conover (Pittsgrove, N.J.) worked a clean sixth inning and he teamed up with Probst to retire the side in the seventh, keeping the Hoyas off the scoreboard. Probst was able to retire the final six batters of the game that sealed the win for the Pirates.
