Staten Island, N.Y. - The Seton Hall baseball team set the tone by scoring 10 runs in the top of the first inning against Wagner as the Pirates defeated the Seahawks, 14-3, on Wednesday afternoon.
Junior Max Viera (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) and graduate student Alex Clyde (Old Tappan, N.J.) both registered three-hit games and they were one of six Pirates to tally multi-hit games at the plate. Freshman Colin Dowlen (Middletown, N.J.) earned his first career win after tossing three scoreless frames.
10 runs in an inning are the most for the Pirates (19-16) since they scored nine runs in the second inning in a 28-8 victory over Princeton on April 11, 2018. It's the most runs scored in a single inning for The Hall since at least 2014.
THE GAME:
In total, the Pirates crossed the plate 10 times in the first inning on nine hits. 10 Pirates reached base before Wagner could record an out and only two of those Seton Hall batters reached on a walk. That Dowlen plenty of breathing room on the mound. After working out of a bases loaded jam in the home half of the first, he proceeded to retire six of the final seven batters he faced that kept it a 10-0 game.
An RBI double by sophomore Pat D'Amico (Lynnfield, Mass.) in the third inning plated Viera and it extended Seton Hall's lead to 11-0. Sophomore Carter Kelsey (Westport, Conn.) worked a scoreless fourth out of the bullpen before Wagner got on the scoreboard with three-run fifth inning that cut its deficit to eight, 11-3.
The Pirates answered in the top of the sixth with three runs thanks to an RBI double by junior Oscar Murray (Brentwood, Calif.), a run-scoring base hit off the bat of Viera and a bases loaded walk drawn by redshirt junior Will Gale (Scotch Plains, N.J.). The Seahawks pushed across runs in the seventh and eighth innings before junior Michael Ciminiello (Saint James, N.Y.) struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth that closed out the win.
THE NUMBERS:
- The Pirates set new season bests with 14 runs and 14 RBI as a team.
- They matched their season high with 18 hits, previously set at East Tennessee State on April 2.
- Seton Hall pitching allowed five runs on eight hits and punched out 11 batters.
- Along with Viera and Clyde, multi-hit games came from Mark McNelly (Limerick, Pa.), Jedier Hernandez (Trenton, N.J.) and Jonathan Luders (Lynnfield, Mass.).
THE NOTES:
- The Pirates are just 13 runs away from matching their run total as a team last season with 18 games still left to play.
- Clyde now leads the Pirates in multi-hit games with 14, followed by Viera with 13 multi-hit performances.
- Graduate student Ryan Sheppard (Florham Park, N.J.) made his first appearance of the season as a pinch hitter.
