
Seton Hall Defeats Butler In Series Finale, 9-2

South Orange, N.J. - Redshirt junior Will Gale (Scotch Plains, N.J.) set a career high with four hits and sophomore Cole Hansen (Skillman, N.J.) put forth a strong five-inning relief effort as the Seton Hall baseball team secured a 9-2 victory over Butler on Sunday at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium.
Hansen didn't allow an earned run and struck out three to earn the win on the mound for the Pirates (20-18, 5-4 BIG EAST). Gale was one of three Pirates to register at least three hits along with junior Max Viera (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.), who went 3-for-4 with three RBI, and redshirt junior Jonathan Luders (Lynnfield, Mass.), who went 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
THE GAME:
Seton Hall starter Chris Shine (South Plainfield, N.J.) worked out of jams in the first two innings but settled in to retire the side in order in the top half of the third. After Gale reached on an infield single, he stole second, advanced to third on a balk and scored on an RBI single off the bat of Viera, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead.
Shine worked another scoreless inning in the fourth before Seton Hall extended its lead in the home half. Senior Oscar Murray (Brentwood, Calif.) hit a bases-clearing triple that scored two and Gale drove him in on an RBI single, making it 4-0 Pirates.
Hansen retired the first six batters he faced in the fifth and sixth innings and the Pirates tacked on three more runs in the home half of the sixth. Gale punched a run scoring single to right field and Viera hit a two-run double to the gap in right center that extended the Seton Hall advantage to 7-0.
After Butler drove in two runs in the top of the seventh, the Pirates answered with two more runs in the home half that made it 9-2, putting the game out of reach.
THE NUMBERS:
- Seton Hall finished with 16 hits while holding Butler to just five hits and two unearned runs.
- The Pirates stole five bases as a team and they threw out a runner on the Bulldogs' lone stolen base attempt.
- 11 of Seton Hall's 16 hits came with runners on base.
- The Pirates went 8-for-16 with runners in scoring position.
- Junior Devin Hack (Somerville, N.J.) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a career-high three stolen bases.
- Murray went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI.
- Both Shine and Hansen threw 71 pitches and posted three strikeouts.
NEWS & NOTES
- Seton Hall has tallied 15 or more hits in five games this season, three more than it had in 2022.
- Hack is now 21-for-21 on the base paths this season and the Pirates have stolen a BIG EAST best 73 stolen bases this season.
- Viera has now hit 14 doubles this season, the most for a Pirates since Matt Toke also hit 14 doubles in 2021.
- Both Murray and Viera have registered three three RBI games this season.
