Storrs, Conn. -Â Despite racking up 14 hits and scoring nine runs, Seton Hall couldn't salvage the final game of a three-game series at No. 9 UConn as the Huskies defeated the Pirates, 15-9, on Sunday afternoon.
Senior Oscar Murray (Brentwood, Calif.) and graduate student Alex Clyde (Old Tappan, N.J.) both had three hits for Seton Hall and sophomore Jedier Hernandez (Trenton, N.J.) went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.
THE GAME:
UConn struck first for the second consecutive game, scoring a run in the first inning, two runs in the second and another run in the third to take a 4-0 lead.
After leaving three runners on base over the first three innings, Seton Hall went to work in the top of the fourth and responded in a big way. Hernandez got the Pirates on the scoreboard with a one-out RBI single that made it 4-1. With the bases loaded, redshirt junior Mark McNelly (Limerick, Pa.) lifted a fly ball to right field that scored another run on a sacrifice fly that cut the deficit in half, 4-2.
With two outs in the fourth, Murray stroked a single to center field that scored another run before a walk drawn by redshirt junior Jonathan Luders (Lynnfield, Mass.) lloaded the bases. Clyde was the next batter and he chopped an infield single that drew an errant throw by the shortstop and allowed two runs to score, giving the Pirates a 5-4 lead. Junior Max Viera (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) followed with a run scoring hit that extended the Pirates' lead to 6-4.
The Huskies responded with six runs of their own in the home half of the fourth, putting themselves back in front, 10-6. UConn did not relent as it pushed its lead to 15-6 entering the top of the ninth where The Hall wouldn't go away quietly. With two runners on base and two outs, freshman Michael Callan Moss (Brooklyn, N.Y.) roped a double to center that scored two runs, making it 15-9 UConn. Hernandez tallied his second RBI of the day on a single to center that made it 15-9 but it was all the Pirates could muster in the ninth.
