
Pirates Wrap Up Day One at Joan Joyce Classic

Boca Raton, Fla. – The Seton Hall softball team opened its 2024 season on Friday afternoon at the Joan Joyce Classic. Kelsey Carr (Ridgewood, N.Y.) pitched a strong game against Michigan in the opener, however the Pirates were dealt a 3-0 defeat. In game two, the Pirates trimmed a 5-0 deficit down to one after a strong fifth inning, but ultimately came up short in a 12-4 setback.

The Pirates return to the diamond on Saturday for two more matchups. The day begins at 1:30 p.m. as The Hall will face Maine, followed by an evening tilt with FAU at 6 p.m.

How it Happened
- Lela Allen (Phoenix, Ariz.) jump started her strong day at the plate with a single to lead off the game, however the Pirates could not pay it off with a run.
- The Wolverines were also to put two runners on base in the second inning, however Carr was able to work herself out of the early jam.
- Michigan struck first in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly, and scored two more in the fifth thanks to back-to-back RBI base hits.
- Caroline Hobbes (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and Jenna Blevins (Flat Rock, Mich.) led off the top of the seventh with back-to-back singles to create a late Pirate threat. However, Michigan was able to evade danger to seal the game thanks to a popout and a double play.
- Carr allowed just two earned runs and struck out two over her six innings of work, adding a base hit at the plate as well.
- Allen and Hobbes each recorded multi-hit efforts, with Hobbes doing so in her first career start.
How it Happened
- A three-run second inning and a two-run fifth inning gave the Cardinals a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth.
- The Pirates posted a crooked number of their own in the last of the fifth, bringing four runs across the plate to cut the deficit to one.
- Erin Howard (Skillman, N.J.) laced a double down the left field line to begin the inning, and pinch-runner Miranda Arruda (Pawcatuck, Conn.) came around to score on a single by Andrea Perez (Corona, Calif.). Later in the inning, Perez would trot home on an RBI single by Allen.
- Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) stepped in next and roped a double to left-center field which scored Taylor Soanes (Missouri City, Texas). Next, Carr grounded a single to center to score Hill and make it a one-run game.
- Louisville would pull away again, scoring seven runs in the sixth inning to take home the victory.
- Hill and Perez each posted multi-hit games.
- Sydney Babik (Gilbert, Ariz.) struck out seven Cardinals on the day, her most strikeouts in a game since punching out nine Rider batters on April 5, 2023.
- Katey Brennan (Yardley, Pa.) picked up her first collegiate base hit with a second inning single.
