Mt. Pleasant, S.C. -- Redshirt junior Cole Hansen (Skillman, N.J.) picked up first win of the season as he struck out four while allowing two earned runs in 5 innings. Graduate student Kyle Lyons (West Chester, Pa.) recorded a hit in third straight game with a pair of RBI in the Seton Hall baseball team's second victory of the 2024 season as the Pirates topped Merrimack, 11-4, on Sunday afternoon.
Graduate student Danny Melnick (Hamilton, N.J.) went 2-for-5 with two RBI while junior Pat D'Amico (Lynnfield, Mass.) went 1-for-5 with two RBI. After Hansen's strong start, the Seton Hall bullpen combined to allow only one earned run and it was led by sophomore Anthony Ehly (Glenside, Pa.), who struck out three in three innings of work.
How It Happened
First seven batters in the Pirates' lineup reached safely to start the game as the Pirates scored five runs during that stretch. Melnick hit a two RBI double to open the scoring. Following Melnick's double, D'Amico hit a double of his own to deep right center field to tack on two more runs. Graduate student Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y.) hit an RBI single to make it 5-0 and the final two runs of the inning came on wild pitches.
Hansen, in his first start of the season, went five innings while striking out four and only allowing two runs on four hits. Ehly, out of the bullpen, had three strikeouts while letting up two runs, one which was earned. Sophomore Colin Dowlen (Middletown, N.J.) came in to pitch the 9th, recording two strikeouts in his inning of relief.
Merrimack was able to tack on two runs each in the fifth and 7th inning to make it a 7-4 game but the Pirates would score four more runs in the 8th putting the game out of reach. Lyons delivered a two RBI single to secure the game. The Pirates start the season 2-1 for the first time since the 2020 season.
