South Orange, N.J. — Ryan Reich (Sellinsgrove, Pa.) had eight strikeouts and no walks in 6.1 innings while allowing three runs but the Seton Hall offense was stymied as St. John's took the rubber game of the three-game series from the Pirates, 9-1, on Sunday at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium.
Reich's eight strikeouts puts him at 84 for the season, the most in a single season at Seton Hall since Shane McCarthy also fanned 84 batters in 2016. Jonathan Luders (Lynnfield, Mass.) reached base in all three plate appearances and he had an RBI single.
How It Happened
Reich struck out the side in the top of the first inning before St. John's recorded the first hit of the ballgame that led off the top of the second inning. After Reich induced a flyout for the first out of the frame, Danny Melnick (Hamilton, N.J.) threw the runner out at second base for the second out and Reich tallied his fourth strikeout of the game for the final out of the inning.
Seton Hall's first baserunner of the game was Luders in the bottom of the third when he was hit for the 22nd time this season. Zack Sylvester (Montville, N.J.) was also hit by a pitch in the fourth but the Pirates' couldn't muster a run. After Reich retired the Johnnies in order in the top of the fifth, Staus Pokrovsky (Pittsgrove, N.J.) led off the home half with a double to left field. Kyle Lyons (West Chester, Pa.) followed with a single through the left side that gave the Pirates runners on the corners with no one out. After a strikeout, Luders drove a pitch back through the middle for a base hit that gave Seton Hall a 1-0 lead.
Reich worked a perfect sixth inning and retired the first batter of the seventh that put him at 15 consecutive St. John's batters that he had sat down. The Red Storm, however, would produce three more base hits in a row that led to two runs and gave St. John's the lead, 2-1. A sacrifice fly before the inning ended put the score at 3-1. St. John's added six more runs in the top of the eighth that ballooned their lead to 9-1.
