Pirates Close Season Out With A Win Over Creighton, 2-1

Omaha, Neb. -- Sophomore Ryan Reich (Selinsgrove, Pa.) struck out five batters in five strong innings pitched only allowing one run and four hits. The bullpen for the Pirates combined for four scoreless innings striking out four and allowing one hit as the Pirates closed out the season with a 2-1 victory over Creighton.

Redshirt senior Jonathan Luders (Lynnfield, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and senior Zack Sylvester (Montville, N.J.) went 1-for-4 with a solo home run.

How It Happened

Creighton got on the board with a run in the bottom of the second which was quickly answered by the Pirates in the top of the third inning when Sylvester hit a solo home run, his sixth of the season, over the left field fence to tie the game at one.

A strong pitching performance from the Pirates kept this a tied game. Reich pitched five innings with one run allowed on four hits with five strikeouts and sophomore Anthony Ehly (Glenside, Pa.) came in relief while striking out three batters and letting up one hit in three innings pitched.

There would be no scoring until the final inning of the season when freshman Aiden Robbins (Yardley, Pa.) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Luders to give the Pirates the 2-1 lead. The Pirates closed out the regular season with a win for the second season in a row and have won four of the last six matchups against Creighton.

The final inning was split between graduate student Alex Nicolosi (Stony Point, N.Y.) and senior Jay Allmer (Cary, N.C.) who combined for a scoreless ninth inning to seal the win for the Pirates. Nicolosi faced only one batter but picked up the strikeout as Allmer came in to close the door and pick up his fifth save of the season as the Pirates finished the season with a 2-1 win over Creighton.
