Mount Pleasant, S.C. — The Frontera brothers, Ryan and Daniel, shined on Friday afternoon in the Seton Hall baseball team's series opener at College of Charleston but the Cougars were able to come away with a 4-1 victory over the Pirates.
Ryan Frontera went 2-for-4 with a run scored, giving him his second multi-hit game of the season. Daniel Frontera tossed four innings allowing just one run and two hits while striking out three. Tommy Manzo registered his first career RBI with a run-scoring base hit in the top of the seventh.
How It Happened
The Pirates got two baserunners on in the first thanks to errors by Charleston infielders but they couldn't scratch a run across. Frontera meanwhile retired five of the first seven batters he faced including back-to-back strikeouts that started the top of the second inning.
AJ Soldra reached on a one-out single in the top of the third, stole second base and moved to third on a wild pitch but couldn't score. In the home half, Charleston was able to pick up its first hit of the game but Frontera worked out of trouble. Seton Hall had runners on again in the top of the fourth inning including a base hit for Ryan Frontera but the Pirates weren't able to get a run across.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Cougars got on the board with a solo home run. Charleston tacked on runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 3-0 lead before the Pirates chipped away at the deficit. Nick Ferri got the inning started with a walk and Ryan Frontera followed with his second base hit. However, Ferri was thrown out at third base attempting to go from first to third on the base hit. Dylan Pacheco entered the game as a pinch hitter and was hit by a pitch to give The Hall runners on first and second with one out. Manzo then stepped to the plate and hit a sharp single to shortstop that allowed Frontera to score from second that made it a 3-1 game.
Charleston answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh that pushed its lead back to three, 4-1, and Pirates were unable to extend the game.
