South Orange, N.J. — Aiden Robbins continued his torrid start to his sophomore season going 3-for-4 with two RBI and Steven Svenson and John Downing combined to allow just one earned in nine innings pitched but the Seton Hall baseball team couldn't come out on top as Marist defeated the Pirates, 4-3, in the series finale on Sunday at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium.
Svenson started the game and went five innings with one earned run while Downing struck out a career-high five batters. AJ Soldra reached base in three of his five plate appearances scoring two runs and recording his team-best fifth tripled of the season. Robbins now has 11 doubles on the season and is three hits away from reaching 100 career hits.
Marist tallied 12 hits but only pushed across four runs while the Pirates recorded three runs on five hits and made two errors.
How It Happened
Svenson retired the first two batters he faced in the top of the first before Marist was able to piece together a two-out rally to jump ahead 1-0 on an RBI double. Svenson prevented further damage by retiring the side in the first and he was able to blank the Red Foxes in the top of the second. Casey Cumiskey led off the bottom of the second with a single to left field and he would later score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Dylan Pacheco that tied up the score at 1-1.
The next six Marist batters would be sat down in order by Svenson in the third and fourth innings. After another scoreless frame thrown by Svenson in the fifth, Seton Hall took its first lead of the game on a Robbins single that scored Soldra from second, making it 2-1 Pirates. With Svenson out of the game, Marist would respond with two runs in the top of the sixth inning that gave the Red Foxes a 3-2 lead. An infield single in the top of the seventh scored another run for Marist that extended its lead to 4-2.
After Downing tossed a scoreless eighth, the Pirates were able to load the bases in the home half but they were unable to score. Downing sat down Marist in order in the top of the ninth that left the door slightly ajar for the Pirates. With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Soldra tripled to the left center field gap and Robbins drove him in with two outs on his 11th double of the season that made it a one-run game, 4-3.Â
