Pirates Fall to BC in Back-and-Forth Opener, 6-4

PONCE, PUERTO RICO – The Seton Hall baseball team opened its 2026 campaign on Friday night at the Puerto Rico Challenge, falling to Boston College, 6-4.
How it Happened
After a clean first inning from starting pitcher Steven Svenson, the Pirates got their starter some early run support in the bottom of the first. Gabe Cavazzoni and Aidan Dill each reached base to open the inning, quicky putting pressure on the BC Starter. After a strikeout, a dribbler out in front of the plate from Joey Wilga was thrown wildly into the outfield to allow Cavazzoni score the game's first run. One batter later, Nick Tomasetto brought home the second run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to center.
Svenson cruised through the first four innings, allowing no runs on four hits while maintaining the Seton Hall lead. BC would eventually get to the sophomore in the fifth for a pair of runs to chase Svenson from the game. Jayden Barroqueiro would come on in relief, but the Eagles would tack the go-ahead run on against him to take the lead, 3-2.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Pirates would quickly regain the lead. Justin Ford would take the first pitch he saw over the wall in left center field for a go-ahead two-run home run, giving the Pirates a 4-3 lead. While rounding first base, Ford injured his ankle and was forced to leave the game, as Jake Lopez entered the game to finish rounding the bases for Ford.
The Eagles put a two-spot on the board in the top of the seventh to regain the lead. In the bottom half, the Pirates threatened to answer right back by putting runners at the corners with one out. BC was able to dodge the threat by inducing a ground ball double play to maintain the lead, which it would hold over the final six outs for the win.

The Pirates are back in action on Saturday at 4 p.m. when they take on Manhattan in Ponce.
