Men's Soccer Seeks First Win of the Season
8/31/2006 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
The Seton Hall men's soccer team will be looking for its first win of the season this weekend as they return to action at the Soccerpost.com Classic in West Long Branch, N.J. The Pirates will face Adelphi on Friday, Sept. 1, at 3:00 p.m. and then take on the host team, Monmouth, on Sunday, Sept. 3, at 3:00 p.m. SHU opened its season with a pair of defeats at the Nike/ALLTEL Classic last weekend in Richmond, Va.
SETON HALL MEN'S SOCCER WEEKLY UPDATE...
SCHELLSCHEIDT NEARS MILESTONE: Head coach Manfred Schellscheidt is the all-time winningest coach in the history of the men’s soccer program at Seton Hall having posted a 199-120-36 record in 19 seasons. Entering 2006, he ranks among the active collegiate coaching leaders in both wins and winning percentage (.615). Schellscheidt will get another chance at his 200th win on Friday against Adelphi, a team led by Bob Montgomery whom has 241 career wins.
FALSE STARTS NOT COMMON FOR PIRATES: The 2-1 loss to James Madison in the season-opener ended the Pirates eight-game unbeaten streak to open seasons. SHU had been 7-0-1 dating back to 1998 in the first games of the season. The last time Seton Hall had lost its first game of the year was a 1-0 loss at Rutgers on Aug. 30, 1997. Ironically, that was also the last time SHU found itself starting a season 0-2, which is where SHU stands this season. The Pirates own a 11-6-2 record in season openers under Manfred Schellscheidt.
PIRATES LEFT SEEING YELLOW AFTER OPENING WEEKEND: In an uncharacteristic show of aggression Seton Hall committed 35 fouls in its opening games and was shown nine yellow cards and a red card. The total includes a 23-foul, five-card game in the opener against James Madison. SHU played the final 40 minutes down a man after senior Matt Gilbert received his second yellow card. Last season the Pirates committed approximately 14 fouls per game and had just 18 yellow cards for the entire season.
PIRATES' HOME GETS AN UPGRADE: Construction has begun at Owen T. Carroll Field, home of Seton Hall’s men’s and women’s soccer and baseball teams, on a new Field Turf synthetic surface. The new surface, which will replace the current grass field, will allow for more flexibility in terms of scheduling, practice and weather-related issues. Bullpens and batting areas will be relocated and new landscaping will be incorporated around the field’s perimeter. The upgrades are part of a plan that also includes renovations to the women’s basketball and volleyball locker rooms adjacent to Walsh Gym, as well as a brand new 4,500-square foot Student Fitness Center in the Richie Regan Athletic Center.
ONE FOR THE ROAD: As dominant as Seton Hall has been at home since 2002, they have struggled just as much on the road. With a total of 12 road games this season, it is not a good sign that SHU has gone 8-20-8 in road games and is 5-3-1 in neutral site games over the past four seasons. The Pirates’ best road record in that span is a 3-4-1 mark in 2004. The Pirates are 0-1-0 to start the year on the road and 0-1-0 in neutral site contests.
