SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Starters Jon Prosinski (Skillman, N.J.) and Josh Prevost (Belle Mead, N.J.) combined for just one earned run over 14 innings pitched as the Seton Hall baseball team swept Connecticut, 4-3 in 11 innings, and 3-0, in a BIG EAST double-header on Thursday. In game one, a pair of freshmen were instrumental in manufacturing the winning run for Seton Hall in the 11th inning. After Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) singled with one out, freshman Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) was called on to pinch run. The speedy outfielder stole second and scored the game-winner when another freshman, Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) delivered a two-out single through the left side. Brian Gilbert (Toms River, N.J.) got the win with 4.1 innings of three-hit relief. Grimm went 3-for-4 with walk and a run scored in game one. Chris Selden (Allenhurst, N.J.) and Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) each had two hits. Selden also had two steals. The Pirates (11-12, 3-2) were able to pull off a win in the afternoon despite committing three errors, an uncharacteristically high number for the BIG EAST’s top defensive team. Prevost and sophomore Jose Lopez (Cranbury, N.J.) combined for a three-hit shutout of Connecticut in game two. Prevost improved to 2-1 on the season with 7.1 innings of work. Lopez earned his first save with 1.2 innings and three strikeouts. The Pirates broke a scoreless tie with a sacrifice fly by Grimm in the bottom of the fourth inning that scored Mike Genovese (Livingston, N.J.) with the game’s first run. Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.) delivered an RBI single to right field in the bottom of the seventh to give Seton Hall a 2-0 advantage. Finally, the Pirates picked up their third run on a sacrifice fly by Genovese in the bottom of the eighth. Annunziata, Kalamar and Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) each had two hits for Seton Hall, which banged out a total of nine as a team. The victories are the first sweep of a double-header since dispatching Pittsburgh twice on May 12, 2012. Seton Hall will complete its three-game series with Connecticut on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
