
Offense Leads Baseball Past Lehigh

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall baseball team erupted for 17 runs on a season-high 21 hits in a 17-7 victory over Lehigh on Wednesday. Sophomore Tyler Boyd (Succasunna, N.J.) went 3-for-4 with three doubles and three RBIs. Freshman Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) continued his on-base barrage, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Mike Genovese (Livingston, N.J.) reached base five times, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI, a HBP, a stolen base and two walks. Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) reached base four times, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored, two RBIs and a walk. Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) extended his hit streak to 10 games. The senior shortstop went 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI, boosting his team-leading batting average to .361. Seton Hall (23-16) jumped on Lehigh from the start, scoring in each of the first four innings. The Pirates put up a five spot in the bottom of the first to set the tone. Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) walked to lead off the game and Weigel was hit by a pitch. Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.) followed with an RBI single to right field, scoring Granite with the game’s first run. Papaccio flew out deep enough to score Weigel with a sacrifice fly to give Seton Hall a 2-0 advantage. Genovese and Annunziata drew back-to-back walks to load the bases and Chris Selden (Allenhurst, N.J.) drove in Kalamar with a sacrifice fly to score the Pirates’ third run. With two outs, Boyd followed with his first of three doubles on the day to drive in two more, giving Seton Hall a commanding 5-0 lead. A pair of RBI singles in the bottom of the second by Weigel and Genovese plated two more Pirate runs to put Seton Hall ahead, 7-0. After Lehigh got to Seton Hall starter Anthony Elia (Flanders, N.J.) for four runs (two earned) in the top of the third, Seton Hall got two back in the bottom of the third. Weigel and Kalamar drove in the runs with RBI singles to give the Pirates a 9-4 lead. Seton Hall got two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, one in the bottom of the sixth and broke the game wide open with five additional runs in the bottom of the seventh. Five pitchers came on in relief of Elia. Rick Mangione (Orange, Conn.) was credited with the win for 1.1 shutout innings. Seton Hall will return to action on Friday for the first of three games at Villanova over the weekend. First pitch is scheduled for 3:15 p.m.
