PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA. – Sophomore Jose Lopez (Cranbury, N.J.) pitched 5.2 innings of one-run baseball as the Seton Hall baseball team routed Villanova, 16-5, on Saturday. The victory is the third straight for the Pirates and the eighth of their last nine games. It also clinches a series win over Villanova, the fifth straight weekend series victory for Seton Hall. Lopez improves to 2-3 on the season after scattering six hits, while giving up just one earned run. He struck out a season-high eight batters and walked three. Every Pirate in the starting lineup had at least one hit in a 19-hit offensive barrage. It’s the 15th time in the last 16 games that Seton Hall has recorded at least nine hits. In that time, the Pirates raised their team batting average from .264 to .302. Junior Dillon Hamlin (Colts Neck, N.J.) went 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and a team-high four RBIs. Seton Hall got on the board immediately. After junior Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) reached on an infield single to second base, the Pirates smoked back-to-back triples by Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) and Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.), each driving in a run. Shortly thereafter, the Pirates extended their lead to 3-0 as Kalamar scored on a wild pitch. In the top of the fourth inning, Villanova’s defense let them down. Both Mike Genovese (Livingston, N.J.) and Chris Selden (Allenhurst, N.J.) reached on errors by Wildcat infielders, and Hamlin made them pay with a two-RBI double into the left field corner to extend the Pirates’ lead to 5-0. Lopez ran into trouble in the bottom of the fourth as Villanova loaded the bases with two outs, but the crafty right-hander was able to get the third out on a pop up to Kalamar in right field to end the threat. A two-out rally added some insurance for Seton Hall in the top of the fifth. Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) singled hard to left and moved to second when Genovese walked. Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) followed with an RBI single to left, which scored Papaccio with the Pirates’ sixth run. Selden reached on an infield single and Hamlin picked up his third RBI of the day with a bases loaded walk to extend the Seton Hall lead to 7-0. Lopez ran into trouble again in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with two outs. This time Lopez walked in a run, the first Villanova run of the series. Seton Hall went to the bullpen, and Conor Krauss (Randolph, N.J.) induced a routine ground ball to short on his first pitch to end the threat and strand three Wildcats. Both teams would erupt for four runs in the seventh inning, making the score 11-5, but Villanova wouldn’t draw closer than six runs for the remainder of the game. Annunziata, Kalamar and Papaccio all had three hits apiece for Seton Hall. Seton Hall will be looking for the three-game sweep of Villanova tomorrow (Sunday). First pitch is scheduled for 12:15 p.m. ET.
