PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA. – The Seton Hall baseball team scored six times in the top of the eighth inning to break a 5-5 tie as the Pirates completed a three-game sweep of Villanova with an 11-8 victory on Sunday.
With the game locked at five, junior Dillon Hamlin (Colts Neck, N.J.) delivered a two-RBI single up the middle to put Seton Hall back in front, 7-5. After Villanova loaded the bases, pinch hitter Tyler Boyd (Succasunna, N.J.) shot a bases clearing triple into the right field corner to extend the Pirates’ lead to 10-5. Seton Hall would add a sixth run in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.). Villanova got three runs back in the bottom of the eighth, but wouldn’t get closer. The win is the fifth straight for Seton Hall and ninth in its last 10 games. It’s also the fifth straight series victory for the Pirates. Hamlin’s two RBIs on Sunday gives him seven for the three-game series. Boyd’s triple is his fourth extra-base hit in his last five plate appearances. Seton Hall (26-16, 10-5) pushed a run across in the top of the first inning. Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled up the middle to start the game, and advanced to second on a ground out by Chris Selden (Allenhurst, N.J.). After Granite stole third, Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) recorded his team-leading 34th RBI with a hard single to centerfield. Villanova (11-32, 2-13) struck back in the bottom of the second on a drag bunt RBI single from Eric Lowe to tie the game at one apiece. Paul Rambaud followed with a single to leftfield, which scored the Wildcats’ second run, giving them their first lead of the series, 2-1. In the bottom of the fourth, Rambaud struck again for the Wildcats. The centerfielder tripled to leftfield to drive in Villanova’s third run and chase Seton Hall starter Greg Terhune (Washington, N.J.). Reliever Josh Prevost (Belle Mead, N.J.) would retire the final two outs, but not before giving up an RBI single to Connor Jones, extending the Villanova lead to 4-1. The Pirates haven’t been in a position to rally in recent weeks, but they proved their ability in the top of the fifth. Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) singled through the left side to lead off and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hamlin. Ryan Sullivan (Stony Point, N.Y.) followed with a triple to right centerfield, scoring Grimm with the Pirates’ second run. Granite then added a triple of his own over the leftfielder’s head to score Sullivan. Selden followed with a ground out to second, but Granite scored to tie the game at four. Villanova’s Max Beermann hit a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the fifth off Prevost to regain the lead for the Wildcats, 5-4. Senior Mike Genovese (Livingston, N.J.) led off the top of the sixth with a deep triple to left centerfield. Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) followed with a fly ball to centerfield, deep enough to score Genovese with the tying run. Prevost improves to 4-2 with the victory. The 6-foot-8 right-hander pitched 3.2 innings and gave up two runs in relief of Terhune. Both Granite and Grimm reached base three times for the Pirates. Granite went 2-for-4 with three runs scored, an RBI, a walk and his 30th stolen base of the season. Grimm was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk. Seton Hall will return to action on Tuesday, April 30 when it heads to Jersey City for a mid-week game at Saint Peter’s. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.2024-25 End-of-Year Highlight Video
