SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Sophomore Zach Prendergast (Horsham, Pa.) pitched seven innings of one-run baseball, but it wasn't enough as the Seton Hall baseball team fell to Connecticut, 1-0, in the first game of the Strikeout Cancer Classic on Saturday.
Prendergast gave up just five hits and struck out four, but took the loss, his second of the season. His first loss of the season was also in a pitchers' duel. Prendergast and Seton Hall lost 1-0 to Jimmy Herget and USF on March 6. This time, it was Connecticut's Carson Cross, who pitched a gem against The Hall. Cross gave up just two hits and struck out seven batters over 8.2 innings.
The Pirates had a rare offensive opportunity in the bottom of the first. Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) walked to lead off the game and stole second base, but Cross struck out the next three Seton Hall batters to strand the runner in scoring position.
Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) singled with one out in the third and stole second. Weigel's ground out advanced Jenkins to third, but alas the Pirates' speedster was kept 90 feet away.
Cross then retired the next 18 Seton Hall batters until giving up a one-out single to Weigel in the ninth. Weigel moved to second on a ground out by Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.), but Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) struck out to end the game.
Connecticut (12-7) got their lone run in the top of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly.
After score more than 11 runs in each of the prior five games, the Pirates' offense could muster only two hits off Cross, who improves to 5-1 on the season.
The Strikeout Cancer Classic concludes tomorrow, but due to Friday's snowstorm, a number of scheduling adjustments were made. Seton Hall will play a double-header on Sunday against Connecticut only. First pitch of the first game is at noon.
