SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- The Seton Hall baseball team mustered just three hits in dropping the series finale to Creighton, 4-2, on Sunday at Owen T. Carroll Field.
Creighton starter Matt Warren had a perfect game through 4.1 innings before Tyler Boyd (Succasunna, N.J.) hit a triple to left center field. Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.) followed with an RBI ground out to get Seton hall on the scoreboard, but it was the only run that Warren allowed. The Bluejay right-hander pitched seven innings and gave up just three hits and one run.
Meanwhile, Seton Hall starter Anthony Elia (Flanders, N.J.) also started well, but Creighton got to him in the middle innings. Like his Bluejay counterpart, Elia was perfect through two innings, but gave up the first run of the game in the third inning on two hits and an error. The left-hander did a fine job of limiting the damage to just one run as he got out of a bases loaded, one-out jam by getting Reagan Fowler to ground into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.
In the fourth however, Creighton got on the scoreboard and again was aided by a Seton Hall error. With one out, Creighton's Brett Murray reached on a fielding error by Rob Dadona (Staten Island, N.Y.). A single, a double and a sacrifice fly later, the Bluejays had a 3-0 lead.
Fowler hit a one-out double off Elia in the fifth inning to plate another insurance run for Creighton and extend its lead to 4-0.
Trailing 4-1 in the eighth inning, the Pirates put another run on the scoreboard, but didn't get any closer. Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) drew a leadoff walk and stole second base. Poduslenko advanced to third on a throwing error by Creighton's right fielder and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.).
Sophomore Joe DiBenedetto (Staten Island, N.Y.) came on in relief of Elia to begin the sixth and pitched the final four innings without giving up a single hit. The left-hander struck out five and walked only one as he pitched to only one over the minimum. DiBenedetto still hasn't given up an earned run in 18.1 innings in 2015 and opponents are now hitting a paltry .125 against him.
Seton Hall will return to action on Friday, May 8 when it travels to Villanova for the first of three games. First pitch is scheduled for 3:45 p.m.
