SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall baseball team scored seven runs in the bottom of the second inning and went on to rout NJIT, 9-2, in the Pirates' home opener on Wednesday.

Seton Hall used six pitchers on the mid-week non-conference matchup to even its record at 6-6 on the young season. Starter Zach Prendergast (Horsham, Pa.) pitched six strong innings, allowing just four hits and no runs to improve to 2-2 on the season.

Turning Point:
With the game scoreless heading to the bottom of the second inning, Seton Hall sent 11 men to the plate and scored seven runs on seven hits to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Junior Mikael-Ali Mogues (New York, N.Y.) went 2-for-2 with an RBI double in the second inning alone. Other key hits in the inning included a two-RBI single by Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) and a two-out two-RBI double by Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.).

Inside the Numbers:

Mogues and Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) had two hits apiece for Seton Hall.

Seton Hall added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, aided by an RBI single by freshman Chris Villa (Staten Island, N.J.).

Seton Hall left 11 men on base, while Indiana left seven.

News & Notes:

Freshman Anthony Scotti (Staten Island, N.Y.) made his collegiate debut.

Mogues' sixth multi-hit game of the season leads the Pirates.

Jenkins has now hit safely in his last eight games, the longest streak this year for a Pirate.

With a steal today, Jenkins has 77 for his career and needs just seven more to move into ninth place on Seton Hall's career list.

With his appearance today, senior Sam Burum (Robbinsville, N.J.) has 67 for his career and moves into eighth place on Seton Hall's all-time pitching appearances list.

With the victory, head coach Rob Sheppard needs just 16 more victories to pass Owen T. Carroll for second on Seton Hall's career wins list.

With the win, Seton Hall improves to a perfect 12-0 all-time against NJIT.

Seton Hall will return to action on Friday, March 11 for the first of three games at the Perfect Game Spring Swing in Emerson, Ga. The Hall will face Savannah State on Friday, Iowa on Saturday and Nebraska-Omaha on Sunday.
