SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall baseball team scored seven runs in the bottom of the second inning and went on to rout NJIT, 9-2, in the Pirates' home opener on Wednesday.
Seton Hall used six pitchers on the mid-week non-conference matchup to even its record at 6-6 on the young season. Starter Zach Prendergast (Horsham, Pa.) pitched six strong innings, allowing just four hits and no runs to improve to 2-2 on the season.
Turning Point:
With the game scoreless heading to the bottom of the second inning, Seton Hall sent 11 men to the plate and scored seven runs on seven hits to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Junior Mikael-Ali Mogues (New York, N.Y.) went 2-for-2 with an RBI double in the second inning alone. Other key hits in the inning included a two-RBI single by Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) and a two-out two-RBI double by Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.).
Inside the Numbers:
- Mogues and Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) had two hits apiece for Seton Hall.
- Seton Hall added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, aided by an RBI single by freshman Chris Villa (Staten Island, N.J.).
