BETHESDA, MD. - Junior Jackson Martin (Collegeville, Pa.) belted his first career home run in the top of the 11th inning to lead the Seton Hall baseball team to a 2-1 victory over Georgetown on Friday.
Martin entered the game as a pinch runner in the top of the ninth inning and made the most of his lone at bat in the top of the 11th, depositing an 0-2 pitch over the right-field fence to give the Pirates the lead.
Seton Hall (31-12, 5-2), winners of six straight games, received a pair of strong pitching performances. Sophomore Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) tossed eight innings and allowed just one unearned run in a no decision. He was replaced by Zach Schellenger (Malvern, Pa.) after hitting a batter to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning. Schellenger, attempting to preserve the Pirates' 1-0 lead, then made an error attempting to field a sacrifice bunt attempt. After issuing a walk to load the bases with no outs, the Pirate closer calmly retired outs on the next three plays. A fielder's choice brought in the tying run, but Schellenger struck out Michael DeRenzi for the second out, and induced a ground ball to first base to retire the side and strand the winning run on third.
Inside the Numbers:
- Junior Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) drove in the Pirates' first run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.
- Schellenger gave up just one hit and one walk in three innings of relief to earn the victory.
- Senior Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) led the Pirates with three hits.
- Jenkins and Mikael-Ali Mogues (New York, N.Y.) each reached base three times.
- Senior Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) stole his 25th base of the season, which ranks second-most in the BIG EAST.
- Seton Hall left eight men on base, while Georgetown left 11.
News & Notes:
- The coaching victory is the 350th of Rob Sheppard's career.
