SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- The top three batters in the Pirates order reached base a combined 12 times as the Seton Hall baseball team routed Rider, 10-4, on Wednesday to snap a five-game losing streak.
Senior Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) reached base a team-high five times, while Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) collected four hits in a 17-hit barrage. The Hall also matched their season-high with 12 stolen bases.
Seton Hall (32-17) grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but it was quickly erased by a four-run second inning for Rider. The first five Broncs to come to the plate all singled, followed by a sacrifice fly, and the Pirates quickly found themselves down 4-2.
Turning Point:
With the score tied at four entering the bottom of the sixth inning, the Pirates took the lead for good. Jenkins reached on a bunt base hit, stole second base, and advanced to third on a sacrifice by Weigel. Senior Brett Fontenelli (Toms River, N.J.) then singled through the left side to score Jenkins with the go-ahead run. With two outs, Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) singled to advance pinch runner Liam McArthur (Basking Ridge, N.J.) to third base. After a Caputo steal, sophomore Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) delivered a two-RBI single through the left side to give The Hall a 7-4 lead.
