SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Sophomore Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) allowed just two earned runs over eight innings and Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) collected three hits as the Seton Hall baseball team took game one of its series with St. John's, 4-3, on Friday.
McCarthy and St. John's starter Kevin Torres were locked in a pitchers' duel early on, keeping the game in a scoreless tie through four innings. In the top of the fifth, St. John's took the early lead on an unearned run, but the Pirates struck back in the bottom half of the inning on a two-out RBI triple by Chiaradio to tie the score at one apiece.
Turning Point:
With the game tied at one, the Pirates took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth inning. Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) and Matt Fortin (Nashua, N.H.) lead off the inning with back-to-back singles. After a fielder's choice, Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) delivered a fly ball to left field in foul territory. St. John's Michael Donadio made the catch for the out, but Fortin tagged up and scored the go-ahead run. Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) followed with an RBI single to center field to give The Hall a 3-1 advantage.
