SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall baseball team carried a lead into the ninth inning, but St. John's rallied for six runs unanswered runs to defeat the Pirates, 8-3, on Saturday to even the three-game series at one win apiece.
With the teams tied at two, senior Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) launched his first career home run, a towering shot over the right field wall, to give The Hall a 3-2 advantage. Weigel finished the day 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base.
Turning Point:
Sophomore Zach Schellenger (Malvern, Pa.) was called upon to lock down his sixth save of the season in the top of the ninth inning, but the Red Storm jumped on the Pirate fire-baller from the start. A walk and the ensuing double by Anthony Brocato tied the game at three. After a single and an intentional walk loaded the bases with one out, Michael Donadio hit a grand slam over the right-center field fence to give the Red Storm a commanding 8-3 lead.
Inside the Numbers:
- Junior Zach Prendergast (Horsham, Pa.) pitched well in a no decision. He allowed two runs over six innings with eight strikeouts and four walks.
- Sophomore Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
- Junior Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) drove in the Pirates' first run in a two-run fourth inning. Ramiz singled home the other run.
- Sophomore Matt Leon (Bethlehem, Pa.) tossed 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.
- Sophomore Chris Morris (Matawan, N.J.) needed just two pitches to induce an inning-ending double-play in the top of the eighth inning.
- Seton Hall left nine men on base, while St. John's left six.
