SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Freshman Cullen Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.) tossed his first career complete-game shutout as the Seton Hall baseball team defeated St. John's, 7-0, on Sunday to win the three-game series.
Dana was dominant, needing just 105 pitches to go the distance against the BIG EAST's top offensive team. The left-hander scattered five hits, struck out seven batters and didn't issue a walk to improve to 6-2 on the season.
Seton Hall (34-18, 7-8) got all the runs it would need in a three-run third inning. Junior Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) reached on a fielding error by the St. John's first baseman to lead off. Sophomore Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) followed with a single, and then Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) successfully sacrificed both into scoring position. Senior Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) reached on an infield single, which scored Caputo with the first run of the game. Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) followed with an RBI groundout. After Matt Fortin (Nashua, N.H.) singled to keep the inning going with two outs, senior Brett Fontenelli (Toms River, N.J.) blasted a double to right field to score Jenkins and give the Pirates a 3-0 lead.
The victory is significant because, not only does it pull the Pirates to within one game of St. John's in the standings, but it gives them the head-to-head tie-breaker.
