SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Sophomore Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) allowed just two earned runs over 6.2 innings, but the Seton Hall baseball team fell to Xavier, 5-3, in a rain-soaked series-opening game on Friday.
Trailing 2-0, the Pirates (31-15, 5-5) battled back to tie the score with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) tripled to lead off the inning, and came into score on the ensuing ground-rule double by Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.). Sophomore Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) then reached on an error by Xavier third baseman Rylan Bannon, which allowed Poduslenko to score with the tying run.
Turning Point:
With the score tied at two, the Musketeers took the lead for good in the top of the fifth inning on an unearned run. Xavier's Matt Fallon struck out to lead off the inning, but on the dropped third strike, catcher Mike Alescio threw wide of first base and Fallon reached safely. Fallon then moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt, third on a passed ball and came in to score on an RBI groundout by Daniel Rizzie.
