SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Pirates' offense erupted for 13 hits, but their pitchers surrendered double-digit runs for only the second time this season as the Seton Hall baseball team dropped the first game of Saturday's double-header to Xavier, 10-6.
The Pirates (31-16, 5-6) trailed 2-0 right away before their bats broke out for a pair of runs in both the bottom of the first and second innings. With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the first inning, Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) singled home a pair of runs to tie the game at two. With one out in the bottom of the second, senior Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) doubled with two in scoring position to give The Hall a 4-2 lead.
The Hall added a fifth run on a run-scoring infield single by Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) in the bottom of the third.
Turning Point:
Seton Hall led 5-2 before Xavier had a big offensive inning in the top of the fourth. Xavier sent all nine men to the plate and scored four runs on five hits against Pirate starter Zach Prendergast (Horsham, Pa.) to take a 6-5 advantage. The first four Musketeers to bat recorded a hit, the fourth of which, a single by Will LaRue plated two runs to tie the game at five. A two-out single by Daniel Rizzie plated LaRue with the go-ahead run.
Xavier score four more times in the top of the fifth inning to put the game out of reach.
