SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – With the score tied at three, the Seton Hall baseball team scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat Manhattan, 7-3, on Saturday.
Â
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Seton Hall broke through with a pair of runs off Manhattan starter Tom Cosgrove. Senior Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) led off with a walk, and junior Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) followed with an RBI triple to tie the game at one. Ramiz then scored on a wild pitch to give The Hall a 2-1 lead.
Â
A sacrifice fly by Poduslenko in the bottom of the fifth extended The Hall's lead to 3-1, but Manhattan came back with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at three.
Â
Turning Point:
In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Pirates did their damage with two outs. After two Pirates were retired following a leadoff walk by Poduslenko, five straight Pirates recorded hits. A single by Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) moved Poduslenko to second, and a check-swing single by Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) drove him in with the go-ahead run. Junior Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) singled to score Caputo, and a Chris Villa (Staten Island, N.Y.) single drove in Toke. Junior Rob Dadona (Staten Island, N.Y.) capped the two-out rally with a ground-rule double to right-center field, which drove in the Pirates' seventh run.
