SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Sophomore Cullen Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.) allowed only one run over 7.2 innings as the Seton Hall baseball team held on for a 3-2 victory over Connecticut on Saturday.
The Pirates' offense mustered only one run on Friday, but matched that total in the bottom of the first inning today. Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) and Al Molina (Freehold, N.J.) led the inning off with back-to-back walks. After a fielder's choice by Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) advanced Ramiz to third base, an RBI single by Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) netted the first run of the game.
Connecticut got the run back in the top of the second on a solo home run by Tyler Gnesda, but the Pirates offense went back to work in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Poduslenko walked and stole second base. Toke followed with an RBI single to center field to give The Hall a 2-1 lead.
In the eighth inning, a sacrifice fly by Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) produced an important insurance run.
Connecticut scored a run in the top of the ninth inning, and loaded the bases, pushing the tying run to third base, but Matt Leon (Bethlehem, Pa.) was able to preserve the victory to earn his first save of the season.
Inside the Numbers:
- Dana earned the victory, going 7.2 innings and allowing just one earned run on four hits, while striking out seven and walking two.
- Senior Anthony Pacillo (Lyndhurst, N.J.) struck out his only batter with the tying run at third base in the top of the eighth inning.
- Senior Mikael-Ali Mogues (New York, N.Y.) had a team-high three hits, going 3-for-4 with a double.
- Toke went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
- Both Seton Hall and Connecticut left eight men on base.
- Poduslenko walked twice for the fourth time in the last five games.
- Seton Hall improves to 46-37 all-time against Connecticut.
Seton Hall will complete its three-game series with Connecticut tomorrow at Owen T. Carroll Field. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. ET.
